My primary sculpting medium these days is fired clay. It’s very much a primal experience to shape and model, with hands and primitive tools, this earthen substance created by the natural processes of the planet. Clay is granite or stone that has decomposed over a vast amount of time through the processes of erosion.
The clay object undergoes its own natural processes, directed by the artist’s hands, heart, and head. As the clay dries, the piece shrinks. As the piece is kiln fired, it undergoes a metamorphic crystalline change.
